Computer Desktop PCs

I need to network my computer to my friends’ computer to share a large amount of files. Mine is an Apple laptop and hers is a PC Desktop. I also have a PC Desktop but none of the files that she needs is on that computer. Please help! How do we go about doing that? I heard from another friend that you have to have each others IP Addresses. Is that true? Thanks!!
