Need help with setting up a shared folder on my desktop and laptop PCs?

Also, my laptop only has a CD burner and trying to back up all my photos will take a lot of CDs whereas my desktop has a DVD burner and backing them up that way would be a lot better. Can this be easily done so that both machines will recognize a “universal” picture folder?
